The Ultimate Family Session Guide

A relaxed, mum-to-mum guide to preparing for your family photography session in Ipswich & Brisbane

First of all — I am SO excited you’re here.

Booking a family session is such a beautiful thing. It means you’re choosing to pause time, even just for an hour, and preserve this season exactly as it is. The wild, the tender, the chaotic, the cuddly.

As a mum of four myself, I know how full life feels. So, this guide is here to make your session feel simple, relaxed and actually enjoyable.

Let’s break it down.

Why Family Photos Matter

There doesn’t have to be a “big reason.”

Sometimes it’s because the kids are growing so fast you can feel it slipping through your fingers.
Sometimes it’s because someone is about to move away.
Sometimes it’s because it’s rare to have everyone together in one place.

Sometimes it’s simply… just because.

Family sessions can celebrate:

  • A new season of life

  • A relationship

  • A milestone

  • A long-awaited reunion

They can also gently honour end-of-life seasons, whether that’s for a beloved grandparent or a treasured pet. Those sessions are handled with so much care and tenderness. They become some of the most meaningful images you will ever have.

Photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about remembering.

The way your child fit in your arms.
The way your partner looks at you.
The way your dog follows you everywhere.
The way your parents hold your babies.

Life moves quickly. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes loudly.

Photographs allow you to pause it, just for a moment, and keep it forever.

And that’s always reason enough.

It’s Not About Perfect — It’s About You

Before we talk outfits or locations, let me say this:

Your kids do not need to behave perfectly.
Your toddler does not need to smile on command.
You do not need to “know how to pose.”

My sessions are relaxed and movement-based. I’ll guide you, but I won’t make you stiff or overly posed. We’ll play, cuddle, tickle, wander, maybe even dance (yes… I will probably embarrass myself at least once).

The magic happens in between, the giggles, the quiet hand holds, the way your child leans into you without even thinking.

That’s what we’re capturing.

Who Can Be Included?

Short answer? Whoever feels like family to you.

It can be just you.
And yes, you are 100% worth celebrating exactly as you are.

It can be you and a friend — the family you chose.
You and your spouse or partner for something romantic and connected.
You and your children.
You and your partner and your babies.

We can include grandparents.
Or create a full extended, multi-generational family session, the kind where cousins run wild and nan and pop get cuddles from everyone.

And of course… your fur (or feather) babies are always welcome.

Whether they have fur, feathers, hair, hooves or wool, they are family. And some of the sweetest, most personality-filled images happen when animals are included.

If they matter to you, they belong in the frame too.

Choosing Your Location

I mostly photograph families on location because natural light, open space, and stunning scenery truly elevate your images and give you that timeless, breathtaking feel you see in my work.

If the weather turns and postponing isn’t an option, we can absolutely move into the studio. But wherever possible, I recommend embracing the outdoors.

Here are some of the beautiful locations I offer around Ipswich, Brisbane and beyond:

  • Beaches (Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast)

  • Spruce forest

  • Open grassy fields

  • Bushland

  • Creeks and waterfalls

  • Lakes

And seasonally, we can also shoot in:

  • Sunflower fields

  • Daisy fields

  • Canola fields

  • Wheat fields

  • Cotton fields

  • Lavender fields

Each location creates a completely different mood, soft and romantic, playful and adventurous, earthy and grounded.

I also absolutely love photographing sessions on your private property. If you have a beautiful garden, acreage, a family farm, or land that holds memories for you, those locations can be the most meaningful of all. There is something incredibly special about documenting your family in a place that already feels like home.

We’ll choose a location based on the look you love, the season, and what feels most like you.

What to Wear (Without the Overwhelm)

Let’s keep this simple.

Step 1: Dress Mum First

Find something you feel amazing in, then build everyone else around that.

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they move. But if dresses aren’t you, don’t force it. You need to feel like yourself.

General Guidelines

  • Choose neutrals or earthy tones

  • Coordinate, but matching can be cute too

  • Avoid neon, big logos, characters, loud graphics

  • Limit patterns (usually one patterned outfit max)

  • Think texture: linen, knits, cotton layers

  • Dress for movement and comfort

For in-home sessions, barefoot is perfect.

And please — no Frozen Crocs or scuffed neon runners if we can help it 😉 Shoes show up in photos!

If you’re stuck, send me photos. I LOVE helping with styling.

Preparing the Kids (and Dads)

Kids

Tell them ahead of time that a fun friend is coming to take photos. Let them know we’ll play games, cuddle, maybe have a dance party.

Please don’t coach them to “smile for the camera.” That usually makes them nervous. I promise I know how to get genuine smiles.

Bribery? Totally fine. Ice cream after is a classic.
During the session, keep snacks clean and non-messy (no chocolate, no blue tongues!).

Make sure they’re:

  • Fed

  • Rested

  • Toileted

  • Comfortable

That’s it.

Dads

If your husband is “not a photo person,” he’s actually my favourite kind of client. By the end of the session, they almost always say, “That wasn’t bad at all.”

He doesn’t have to stand and smile the whole time. He just has to love on his family. Easy.

On the Day

The first 10 minutes might feel a little awkward. That’s normal. Then you’ll relax.

Arrive early so you’re not rushed. Sessions are timed around light, so being late can mean missing the best glow.

Bring:

  • Water

  • A brush and small makeup bag

  • Snacks

  • A backup outfit if you’re unsure

  • Comfortable shoes for walking

And please… bring your children 😉

(Tempting not to some days, I know.)

During the Session

Never stop moving.

When I give you direction, don’t freeze. Walk. Sway. Hug. Laugh. Tickle. Whisper. Kiss cheeks. Spin toddlers. Snuggle babies.

Movement = magic.

If something feels uncomfortable, adjust. This is meant to feel natural.

Trust me. Trust the process. All I need is a split second to I’ll capture something beautiful.

After Your Session

Your selection full gallery will be delivered via private online gallery within 5-7 business days. Normally sooner as I can’t wait to see which photos you love most…if you can choose at all!

From there, you can pick your favourites and I’ll work my magic.

Your final gallery will be ready in 3-5weeks and you can download your images and choose how you’d love to display them, albums, frames, heirloom pieces.

These photos deserve more than living on your phone.

Final Thoughts (From One Mum to Another)

You deserve to be in the frame.

One day your children will look for photos of you holding them, laughing with them, loving them.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.

I cannot wait to capture your family exactly as you are.

If you have any questions at all, just message me. I’m always here.
