The Ultimate Mini Session Guide: What to Expect, What to Wear & How to Prepare
If you’ve ever thought, “I really need updated photos of the kids… but I just don’t have the time or energy for a full session right now” then mini sessions are for you!
As a mum of little ones myself (and a Brisbane family photographer), I know how much goes into just getting everyone out the door. That’s exactly why I love offering mini sessions throughout the year. They’re simple, beautiful, and designed to fit into real family life.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, so you can show up feeling calm, prepared, and actually enjoy the experience.
What Even Is a Mini Session?
Think of mini sessions as a shorter, more streamlined version of a full photography session.
They’re held on specific dates, held in studio or at carefully chosen locations around Brisbane, the Gold Coast hinterland, and surrounds, and styled in a way that reflects the season. Some of the sessions I offer throughout the year include:
Sunflower minis
Cotton field minis
Jacaranda minis
Daisy field minis
Back to school minis
Festive minis
Mother’s Day minis
Father’s Day minis
They’re perfect if you love updated photos throughout the year, or just want something beautiful without the time commitment of a full session.
Because they’re shorter and booked back-to-back, they do run a little differently and that’s where a bit of prep makes all the difference.
What to Expect (The Full Process)
Once you book your mini session, everything is designed to be really simple and guided.
You’ll choose your time slot, sign your contract, and secure your booking with a deposit. Each mini session is a little different, so pricing may vary depending on the setup, location, and any farmer or venue fees involved. The remaining balance is due a week before your session, so there’s nothing to think about last minute.
In the lead-up, I’ll send you a preparation guide which will be very similar to this, but tailored to your specific session, and then a reminder with all the final details so you’re not left guessing or missing anything.
On the day, we meet, we keep things relaxed and natural, and we make the most of our short time together.
After your session, I go through and carefully select and edit the best images before sending you a gallery to choose from. You’ll pick your favourites, with the option to upgrade or add extra images and prints if you fall in love with more, which most families do.
Then your final gallery is delivered, ready for you to download, and enjoy forever.
The Biggest Thing to Know About Mini Sessions
They are short. And that’s a good thing.
But it does mean one very important thing:
You need to arrive ready to go.
Because sessions are booked back-to-back, there’s no buffer time. If you arrive late, it simply cuts into your session.
I always recommend arriving about 5-10 minutes early, especially around Brisbane locations where parking or traffic can catch you off guard.
Hair done, kids dressed, faces wiped, ready to jump straight in it.
What to Wear (Without the Stress)
This is usually the part that feels overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
The easiest way to approach it is this:
coordinate, don’t match (unless you really, really want to!)
Start with your outfit first (mums always set the tone), then build everyone else’s outfits around that.
Think soft, neutral tones, or a simple colour palette of 2–4 colours. Texture photographs beautifully, things like linen, knits, or flowy fabrics can add that extra depth to your photos.
A few things I gently steer families away from are:
Big logos or writing
Bright/neon colours
Lots of busy patterns
Matching outfits exactly
For women and mums, dresses and skirts always photograph beautifully, especially anything with movement. But most importantly, wear something you feel good in, even if it is dungarees! That confidence shows up in every image.
For kids, comfort is everything. If they’re itchy, uncomfortable, or don’t like what they’re wearing… we’ll see it on their faces.
A Quick Note About the Kids
If you take one thing from this whole guide, let it be this:
You don’t need perfectly behaved children to get beautiful photos.
In fact, some of the best moments come from the in-between, the cuddles, the chaos, the way they cling to you or run off laughing.
A few simple things that help:
Feed them beforehand (protein over sugar if you can)
Keep the lead-up calm and low-pressure
Let them know it’ll be fun, not something they have to “perform” in
Bring snacks, wipes, maybe a small toy, but mostly just bring patience, a chill vibe, and a sense of humour.
I’ve got the rest covered.
If You’re Bringing a Pet
I love when families include their pets (to the pet friendly locations!) they’re such a big part of your story.
Just keep in mind that mini sessions move quickly, so having an extra set of hands can really help. If you can bring someone along to hold them when they’re not in photos, it makes everything smoother, unless you want them in every shot, which is totally cool too.
A quick walk beforehand, a favourite toy, a few bribery treats, and a simple leash, that’s all you need.
On the Day Itself
When you arrive, I’ll guide you through everything.
You don’t need to worry about posing, what to do with your hands, or whether your kids are “doing it right.” I’ll give you gentle direction, but mostly I’ll be encouraging you to interact naturally, to play, cuddle, dance, laugh, and just be together.
That’s where the magic is. Those little moments of beautiful connection.
A Little Note for You, Mum
I know you’re the one organising this.
Picking outfits, packing snacks, getting everyone out the door.
But this is for you too.
These photos are part of your story. The way your children look at you, hold onto you, love you in this season. The way they get to look back at you as a mum in years to come.
So take a breath when you arrive.
You’ve done plenty already.
Just be present.
And for the Guys…
I know this might not be your first choice of how to spend your day.
But it’s quick, it’s relaxed, and I promise, it’s not as awkward as you think. You might even want to smile.
Most guys and dads leave saying, “that actually wasn’t too bad.” (which is a win in my books 😄)
The Most Important Thing
Mini sessions aren’t about perfection.
They’re about capturing a moment in time. your family, your way.
The giggles, the chaos, the cuddles, the in-between love and laugher.
So don’t stress about posing to perfection or getting everything “just right.”
Come as you are, and let me take care of the rest.
