How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

Your baby is finally here. 🤍

Those first weeks are sacred. And while you’re still adjusting to life with your newest love, it’s also the perfect time to preserve these fleeting moments with professional newborn photography.

The Ultimate Newborn Photography Prep Guide

As a newborn photographer and a mum myself, I know how overwhelming this season can feel. So, this guide will walk you through exactly how to prepare for your newborn photography session — so you can arrive calm, confident, and ready to simply soak it in.

Why Professional Newborn Photography Is Worth It

Newborns are beautiful… and completely unpredictable.

Even if you love photography, babies are not easy models. They need warmth, feeding breaks, soothing, patience, and above all, safe handling.

Hiring a professional newborn photographer means:

  • You don’t have to stress about posing or lighting

  • Your baby’s safety is prioritised at all times

  • You get beautifully edited, timeless images

  • You can actually be in the photos

And years from now, when the newborn haze has faded, you’ll have memories of just how tiny they once were.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Session?

When to Enquire

The ideal time to book your newborn photography session is during your second or third trimester.

Your session date is tentatively reserved around your due date, and once baby arrives, we confirm the exact day.

If baby is already here — don’t worry. Reach out as soon as possible and we’ll find the best available date.

The Best Age for Newborn Photos

5–21 Days Old (Most Popular)

This is the sweet spot for:

  • Curled, sleepy poses

  • Wrapped setups

  • Classic newborn portraits

Babies are typically sleepier and more flexible during this window.

3–12 Weeks Old

If you prefer:

  • More awake images

  • Eye contact

  • Stretchy, expressive poses

We can absolutely create something beautiful at this stage too.

There is no “wrong” time. It just different looks.

Studio Newborn Sessions

Perfect if you love:

  • Clean, timeless backdrops

  • Styled wraps and textures

  • Controlled lighting

  • A fully prepped space where you just arrive and relax

The studio is warm, calm, and fully stocked with wraps, blankets, headbands, bonnets and carefully chosen props.

You truly only need to bring your baby and milk.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours.

This allows time for:

  • Feeding breaks

  • Settling and cuddling

  • Diaper changes

  • Sibling photos

  • Slow, safe posing transitions

Unlike adult sessions, newborn photography cannot and should not be rushed.

Patience is what creates those dreamy images.

How to Prepare Baby for the Session

These are gentle suggestions, you know your baby best and what they like and need.

1. Keep Baby Awake Before the Session

If possible, try:

  • Keeping baby awake for 30–60 minutes beforehand

  • A warm bath before leaving

This helps baby fall into a deeper sleep once we begin.

But please don’t stress if it doesn’t go to plan as I know babies have their own schedules.

2. Feed Baby Fully

A full tummy = a sleepy baby.

  • Feed right before leaving home (or upon arrival if nearby)

  • Plan for extra feeds during the session

  • Bring more milk than you think you’ll need

Babies often feed more than usual during newborn sessions because being gently posed is surprisingly tiring work.

If you’re breastfeeding, try to avoid caffeine the morning of your session if possible as yes, it does go into your milk.

3. Dress Baby in Loose Clothing

Before arriving:

  • Loosen nappies and tight clothing about 30 minutes prior

  • Dress baby in a zip-up or button-up onesie

  • Avoid anything that has to be pulled over their head

This prevents red marks on their skin and is the least disturbing if baby is asleep upon arrival.

4. Bring a Dummy (Even If You Don’t Normally Use One)

A pacifier can work wonders for quick settling between poses.

Even if bub doesn’t really use one yet, if you have one, please bring it anyway as it can sometimes make all the difference when they need a little bit of sucking for comfort.

If you’d prefer not to use one, that’s completely fine — just let your photographer know.

What to Bring to Your Newborn Photography Session

You truly don’t need much.

Essentials:

  • Extra nappies & wipes

  • Extra milk or formula

  • A dummy (optional but helpful)

  • A spare outfit for baby

  • A spare top for parents (trust me 😉)

  • Snacks and quiet activities for siblings

If you have a sentimental items, heirloom blanket, ultrasound photo, or special teddy that you’d like included in a photo, please bring it along and let your photographer know beforehand including a quick photo so they can prepare accordingly.

What Will Baby Wear?

In most studio sessions, babies are photographed:

  • Wrapped

  • In simple fitted outfits

  • Or beautifully nude (tastefully posed)

The goal is to highlight:

  • Tiny Toes

  • Long lashes

  • Rolls and wrinkles

  • That beautiful newborn scrunch

At Luminous Family Photography, I have all the wraps and outfits needed for baby’s photos.

What Should Parents & Siblings Wear for Newborn Photos?

This is one of the most common questions.

Keep It Simple & Neutral

Stick with:

  • Cream

  • Beige

  • White

  • Warm earthy tones

  • Denim

But if you want something bold and vibrant or have some traditional clothes you wish to wear, by all means please do! It can help to let the photographer know what your colour scheme is beforehand so they can prepare an outfit for baby to coordinate with you.

Avoid:

  • Logos

  • Busy patterns

  • Neon colours

  • Bright prints

Bright colours can reflect onto baby’s skin.

For Mums

  • Soft dresses, flowing fabrics, lace details

  • Neutral tanks or simple tops

  • Avoid tight waistbands if recently postpartum

  • Keep jewellery minimal

  • Neutral or matching nails

You just birthed a human. You don’t need to look “perfect.” I’ll guide you with flattering light and gentle direction.

For Dads

  • Well-fitting neutral t-shirt, shirt, or henley

  • Avoid undershirts or large logos

  • Remove watches

Simple always wins.

For Siblings

Girls:

  • Neutral dresses

  • No glitter or bold prints

  • Simple hair styling (don’t forget the ribbons)

Boys:

  • Neutral t-shirt or henley

  • Comfy jeans or pants

  • No graphics or wording

If siblings are under 5, consider arranging for them to leave with grandam or an auntie after their photos are finished as sessions can feel long for little ones.

Keeping Baby Comfortable During the Session

Warm Studio Environment

The studio is kept warm and adjusted depending on how many layers baby is in.

This keeps baby settled while undressed and posed, but you may want to dress in layers.

Safety First — Always

Some poses you see online are composite images (multiple images blended together).

Your baby will never be placed in an unsafe position.

If baby is uncomfortable in a pose, we move on.

Safety will always come before creativity.

Common Concerns

Is Flash Photography Safe for Newborns?

Yes, when used correctly by a trained professional.

Flash is never placed directly in baby’s face at close range. Professional lighting is diffused and safe.

What If Baby Cries?

They will.

That’s normal.

We pause.
We cuddle.
We feed.

There is no rushing.

What If Baby Has Acne or Peeling Skin?

Completely normal.

Temporary blemishes can be gently retouched, while keeping their beautiful newborn texture intact.

After Your Session

You’ll receive a private online gallery to view and select your images from the comfort of home.

From there you can:

  • Download digital files

  • Order fine art prints

  • Create albums

  • Choose wall art for your home

And this is where the magic really begins — seeing your baby displayed beautifully in your space.

Final Thoughts: Relax & Trust the Process

You cannot control how a newborn session will unfold.

Babies are beautifully unpredictable.

The best thing you can do?

Come fed.
Come comfortable.
Come open.

And let me take care of the rest.

These early days pass in a blink — but your photographs will hold them still forever.
