Your Guide to Christmas Mini Sessions: Outfits, Tips & What to Expect
The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for Your Christmas Mini Session
Everything You Need to Know for Beautiful, Stress-Free Christmas Photos
Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year. Between decorating the tree, wrapping gifts, baking treats, and spending time with loved ones, it's a season filled with memories you'll treasure forever. I can still remember the smell of the ginger bread filling the air, the getting up at night to see the colourful lights in the dark, and the taste of great-grandma’s Christmas pudding in my mouth.
That's exactly why Christmas Mini Sessions have become one of the most popular family photography experiences each year. Everyone wants to keep the childhood magic alive.
Although your session only lasts around 20 minutes, a little preparation beforehand makes an enormous difference. The more relaxed everyone is, the more natural your photographs will feel and those genuine smiles and cuddles are the images you'll treasure for decades.
If you've booked your Christmas Mini Session with Luminous Family Photography in Ipswich, here is everything you need to know before the big day.
What is a Christmas Mini Session?
Christmas Mini Sessions are short, beautifully styled photography sessions designed specifically for busy families wanting updated Christmas portraits.
Unlike a full family session, mini sessions are shorter and carefully planned. Every minute counts, which is why arriving prepared allows us to spend our time creating beautiful memories instead of fixing little issues.
They're perfect for:
Christmas cards
Gifts for grandparents
Annual family portraits
Children's milestone photos
Updating wall art before Christmas
Choose Outfits That Coordinate
One of the biggest questions I receive every year is:
"What should we wear?"
The secret isn't necessarily perfectly matchy matchy outfits.
Instead, choose 2–3 coordinating colours and build everyone's outfits around that palette.
Some timeless Christmas colour combinations include:
Deep green, cream and beige
Burgundy, ivory and denim
Forest green, camel and white
Red, oatmeal and navy
Sage, cream and soft brown
Mixing textures also adds beautiful depth to your images. Think along the lines of knitted jumpers, velvet dresses, corduroy, linen, lace, and chunky scarves. These photograph beautifully without overwhelming your family.
Avoid:
Large logos
Cartoon characters
Neon colours
Busy patterns
Clothes that don't fit comfortably
UNLESS you want to go all out and do fun matching Chrissy pj’s, or matching sweaters etc. Then go to town on the colours and patterns. But to get the most out of your session, consider wearing your ugly Christmas sweaters over nicer tops underneath, so you can have the fun matching sweater photos, slip them off and then get a second more timeless look in some photos too. Also maybe wearing the pj’s under some more dressier clothes, so you can get some lovely photos, and then strip down quickly for some crazy family fun! Timeless clothing ensures your photographs will still look beautiful years from now, but a little crazy is wear a lot of memories are made too!
Dress for Comfort
Happy children photograph beautifully. If little ones are itchy, uncomfortable or constantly pulling at their clothes, it shows. Choose outfits they can move, cuddle, and play in comfortably. Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they create movement, while soft knitwear adds warmth and texture.
Prepare Everyone Before You Leave Home
The best sessions start before you even arrive.
Before leaving home or the car:
✓ Empty everyone's pockets of unnecessities
Phones, wallets, keys and bulky items create awkward bumps in clothing.
✓ Remove smart watches and fitness trackers
They date photographs quickly and can distract from otherwise timeless portraits.
✓ Remove hair ties from wrists
They're surprisingly noticeable in photographs.
✓ Clean little faces
Check around noses, mouths and eyes.
✓ Brush everyone's hair
Even a quick tidy-up once you arrive in the car makes a huge difference.
✓ Check fingernails
Remove chipped nail polish if possible.
Arrive Early
Christmas Mini Sessions run back-to-back throughout the day. Arriving 5 minutes early allows everyone to settle, use the bathroom if needed, and relax before it's your turn. Please allow extra travel time for weekend traffic and parking. If you arrive late, unfortunately your session time will need to be shortened so that every family after you stays on schedule.
Feed the Kids Beforehand
Hungry children rarely enjoy photographs.
Try to:
Feed everyone before arriving.
Avoid messy snacks immediately beforehand.
Save chocolate for after the session!
If needed, bring small, mess-free snacks to enjoy afterwards as a reward. I find sultanas, cruskits, or water crackers excellent choices.
Plan Around Sleep Times
For babies and toddlers especially, timing can make all the difference.
Whenever possible:
Avoid booking during nap time.
Let children wake naturally beforehand.
Allow enough time so nobody feels rushed.
A well-rested child is much more likely to enjoy the experience.
Trust the Process
Parents often worry their children won't smile, but here's the secret…
I don't really expect them to. Not right away.
The best photographs rarely come from asking children to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera. Instead, I encourage laughter, movement, cuddles, and play. This allows me to build a connection with your children. The less pressure children feel, the happier and more genuine their expressions become. It is my job to draw those shy little smiles out of them. So relaxed parents helps make for relaxed kiddos.
Keep Phones Away During the Session
As tempting as it is to capture behind-the-scenes moments, phones quickly become distractions, especially for little ones if they think they will get to watch something.
Children naturally look toward whoever is holding a phone. Instead, relax and enjoy the experience in front of the camera, not behind it. Be there in the moment with them. I promise, I will capture everything beautifully for you. If time allows at the end, you're welcome to take a few behind-the-scenes photos once we've basically finished.
Supervise Children Around the Set
Every Christmas set is carefully handcrafted and designed for dozens and dozens of families to enjoy throughout the season. Please help little ones avoid climbing on props or touching decorations unless invited during the session. This helps keep the set looking magical for every family who visits. But don’t worry, there will be lots of things for little hands to touch and explore, you may just need to guide them gently in that direction.
What Should You Bring?
Your session is short, so there's no need to pack half the house.
A few helpful items include:
Water
Wipes
Hairbrush
Small mess-free snacks
Dummy if needed
Favourite comfort toy (for toddlers)
Christmas hats or accessories (optional)
Matching Christmas pyjamas or sweaters
Relax and Enjoy the Moment
Children don't need to be perfect. Families don't need perfect smiles. Real memories are created in the laughter between poses, the cuddles, the giggles, the whispered jokes and the little moments you don't even realise are happening. Some of my clients' favourite photographs are the ones they never expected. The ones you could never plan for. The burst of laughter, the cheeky grin, or the cuddle that happened naturally. Those are the memories worth preserving.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long are Christmas Mini Sessions?
Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes, making them perfect for busy families with young children.
Can grandparents or cousins join?
Christmas Minis are designed for immediate family only. If you'd like extended family included, please contact me to discuss booking back-to-back sessions or a full family session in the Christmas set.
Can we change outfits?
Because sessions are short, there isn't enough time for multiple outfit changes on multiple people. If you'd like one quick change into Christmas pyjamas, we can often squeeze that in no worries.
When will we receive our gallery?
Your selection gallery gallery will be delivered promptly within 7 business days. You’ll then have 3 days to select your images. The final, edited images will be delivered to you within 5 weeks of your session (normally much less), giving you plenty of time to order Christmas cards, gifts and wall art before Christmas. If you need your images back urgently, you can always add the rush fee to have your images within a week from selection (or less if you require it).
Ready for a Magical Christmas?
Christmas Mini Sessions sell out every year, and it's easy to see why. They're fun, relaxed, beautifully styled and create timeless keepsakes your family will cherish for generations. I also see parents scrambling last minute to find an available session for their youngsters, so please don’t delay, but book in asap. If something does come up closer to the date, we can look at rescheduling, but at least you have reserved your spot. A little preparation before your session means you can simply arrive, relax, and enjoy making memories while I take care of the rest. I can't wait to welcome you into my Winter Wonderland and create something truly special for your family this Christmas.
